You’re three minutes into a tutorial, you miss a step, and you need to go back ten seconds. Your hand leaves the keyboard, hunts for the mouse, drags the scrubber, overshoots. Then does it again.

Start with these eight
YouTube has around two dozen shortcuts. Realistically you’ll use eight of them every single day, and the rest maybe twice a year. Learn this block first and stop there if you want.

The chapter shortcuts are the least known ones here and easily the most useful on long videos. If the creator marked up chapters, Ctrl and the arrow keys skip straight between them instead of guessing with the scrubber.

Shift + P only walks backwards through a playlist. Outside a playlist it does nothing, which trips people up constantly.
Why a shortcut suddenly stops working
Nine times out of ten it’s focus, not a bug. YouTube sends keystrokes to whatever part of the page the browser thinks you’re using.
- Space scrolls the page instead of pausing. Focus is on the document, not the player. Click the video once, or just use K, which behaves consistently either way.
- Arrow keys move the volume when you wanted to seek. Up and Down control volume when the seek bar has focus. Left and Right seek. Tab moves focus between the two.
- Nothing works at all. Your cursor is in the search box or a comment field. Press Esc first.
- An extension ate the key. Ad blockers and video-speed extensions bind their own keys. Test in an incognito window with extensions off.
- You’re not on youtube.com. Embedded players on other sites accept most playback keys once you click inside the frame, but not the site-level ones like the slash key.
YouTube Music, YouTube TV and the phone apps each run a much smaller set. Don’t expect the desktop list to carry over.
Can you remap them?
Not inside YouTube. There’s no settings page for it and no sign Google plans one. Browser extensions can rebind keys or add new ones, and that’s the only route, so weigh the permissions any such extension asks for before installing it.

Because keyboard focus is on the page, not the player. Space only plays or pauses when the video or seek bar is selected, and it activates whatever button has focus otherwise. Click the video once, or use K, which pauses reliably no matter where focus sits.
Can I change or add my own YouTube keyboard shortcuts?

How fast can the keyboard push playback speed?
Shift and the period key step the rate up through 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x and 2x, then stop. Anything faster needs a browser extension. Shift and the comma key walks back down the same steps toward 0.25x.
Why do my arrow keys change the volume instead of seeking?
Focus is on the seek bar, where the up and down arrows control volume in 5% steps and left and right seek by 5 seconds. Press Tab to move focus, or use J and L to seek 10 seconds without touching the arrows.
