Bitdefender vs Norton looks like a coin toss: both scored 18 out of 18 in AV-TEST’s latest test.
Our pick for most homes is Bitdefender Total Security. Five devices renew at $109.99 instead of $124.99, and it raised one false alarm where Norton raised 15. Choose Norton 360 Deluxe if you’ll use a VPN every day, because Norton doesn’t cap it.
We priced both US stores and read every 2026 lab report. The real question isn’t malware. It’s whether a VPN you’ll use is worth $15 more a year.
How we compared them (and what we didn’t do)
This is a research-only comparison. We didn’t install either app, so there are no scan times or screenshots.
Prices come from Bitdefender’s and Norton’s US stores on 20 October 2026, before sales tax. Protection numbers come from AV-TEST’s July-August 2026 test and AV-Comparatives’ 2026 consumer reports.

What do Bitdefender and Norton cost after the first year?
Bitdefender is cheaper to keep in three of these five setups, and the identity tiers tie. Norton often wins the first year.
| What you need | Bitdefender plan (first year / renewal) | Norton plan (first year / renewal) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 device, antivirus only | Antivirus Plus: $24.99 / $49.99 | AntiVirus Plus: $29.99 / $59.99 |
| 3 devices | Antivirus Plus: $39.99 / $69.99 | Norton 360 Standard: $39.99 / $94.99 |
| 5 devices, full suite | Total Security: $59.99 / $109.99 | Norton 360 Deluxe: $49.99 / $124.99 |
| 5 devices, unlimited VPN | Premium Security: $79.99 / $129.99 | Norton 360 Deluxe: $49.99 / $124.99 |
| Identity theft cover | Ultimate Security Plus: $119.99 / $189.99 (5 devices) | 360 with LifeLock Select Plus: $99.99 / $189.99 (10 devices) |
Per device, Total Security renews at $22 a year and Deluxe at $25. Add an unlimited VPN and the order flips. Deluxe beats Bitdefender Premium Security by $30 in year one and $5 a year after.
The identity tiers both renew at $189.99. Norton’s Select Plus covers 10 devices to Bitdefender’s five and adds 250 GB of backup.

Round winner: Bitdefender, unless you want the VPN.
Which one blocks more malware?
Bitdefender, just. AV-TEST gave both full marks in July and August 2026, and both stopped all 297 zero-day attacks.
AV-Comparatives found small gaps. Bitdefender blocked 398 of 400 real-world attacks to Norton’s 397, and scored 99.98% to Norton’s 99.96% in September’s 10,000-sample malware test.
Offline, the gap widens: 97.2% for Bitdefender and 95.4% for Norton. That’s the number to watch if you often copy files from flash drives or work on flights.
Round winner: Bitdefender, by a margin most people will never notice.
Which one raises fewer false alarms?
Bitdefender. In AV-Comparatives’ September malware test, it wrongly flagged one clean file. Norton flagged 15, which puts it in the lab’s “many false positives” band.
It’s closer elsewhere: both had five in the real-world test, and Norton had none in AV-TEST’s usability checks. Still, if you install lots of small tools or indie games, Bitdefender will quarantine fewer safe files.
Round winner: Bitdefender.
Which one slows your PC down less?
Norton. AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 speed test ran on a budget Core i3 machine with 8 GB of RAM. Norton’s impact score was 5.3, fifth of 19 products; Bitdefender’s was 9.6, ninth. Lower is better.
Neither will slow a modern laptop much. On an older PC, pick Norton.

Round winner: Norton.
Which VPN can you actually use?
Norton’s, by a long way. Every Norton 360 plan includes it, uncapped, on as many devices as the plan covers. An August 2026 update added Double VPN and servers in over 100 countries. Only the entry AntiVirus Plus plan goes without.
Bitdefender’s VPN in Antivirus Plus and Total Security stops at 200 MB a day per device. That’s a banking session on hotel Wi-Fi, not an evening of streaming. Unlimited traffic starts at Premium Security.

Round winner: Norton.
What else do you get for the money?
Norton packs in more at the five-device level. Deluxe adds 50 GB of cloud backup, dark web monitoring, Privacy Monitor and parental controls.
Two of those come with conditions. The backup works only on Windows, and automatic deepfake detection needs Windows 11 with 16 GB of RAM.
Bitdefender Total Security has a password manager, parental controls and breach detection, but no cloud backup on any plan. Ongoing dark web monitoring waits until Ultimate Security at $159.99 a year.
Both bundle a password vault, but an app from our password manager list survives a switch of antivirus.
Round winner: Norton, if you’re on Windows.
Do both work on Mac, Android and iPhone?
Yes. Every paid plan from both covers Windows, macOS, Android and iOS under one account.
Norton’s Mac app skips Cloud Backup, Parental Control and SafeCam. Bitdefender’s free antivirus is the one Windows-only product here.
Round winner: tie.
Which is easier to cancel or get a refund from?
Norton. Its money-back guarantee lasts 60 days after you buy an annual plan, and again for 60 days after each yearly renewal charge. Bitdefender gives you 30 days in both cases.
Norton has a catch, though. It can bill you up to 35 days before the renewal date. Bitdefender emails you 45 days before it renews.
Round winner: Norton.
The catch: Norton’s cheap first year costs the most to keep
Norton 360 Deluxe jumps from $49.99 to $124.99 at renewal. That’s a 150% rise. Bitdefender Total Security rises 83%, from $59.99 to $109.99.
Over three years, Total Security costs $279.97 and Deluxe costs $299.97. The plan that looked $10 cheaper at checkout ends up $20 dearer.
That’s not a reason to avoid Norton. It’s a reason to judge both on the second-year price.
Bitdefender vs Norton: which should you buy?
Pick Bitdefender Total Security if you want the most accurate protection on five devices at the lowest renewal price. It suits a freelancer with a work laptop, a MacBook and two phones who doesn’t stream over a VPN. Our Bitdefender value breakdown covers which of its plans gives the most per dollar.
Pick Norton 360 Deluxe if you’ll run a VPN daily, travel a lot or want Windows files backed up without another subscription. It’s also the lighter pick for an older PC.
Pick neither if you only use one Windows PC and browse carefully. Good habits and the free tools covered in our data breach safety guide go further than either upgrade.

Our take: if you’re unsure, start with Bitdefender Total Security. You can add a VPN later. You can’t make Norton’s renewal cheaper later.
Frequently asked questions
Does Norton’s Virus Protection Promise still apply if I turn off auto-renewal?
No. Norton’s small print says the promise requires an automatically renewing subscription. Switch auto-renewal off and your protection runs until the term ends, but you lose Norton’s promise of help removing a virus it missed. Turn auto-renewal back on and the promise returns.
Can I get a refund on a Norton monthly plan?
Only on the first payment. Norton refunds a monthly subscription within 14 days of the first purchase, and later monthly charges aren’t refundable. The 60-day guarantee covers annual plans only. If you might cancel, the annual plan is the safer buy despite the bigger upfront bill.
Does Norton’s cloud backup work on a Mac or phone?
No. Norton’s system requirements say Cloud Backup runs on Windows only. It’s not available on Mac, Android, Windows in S mode or Windows on ARM. A Mac-only household gets nothing from Deluxe’s 50 GB, which makes Bitdefender’s cheaper renewal harder to argue against.
Which is cheaper for a family with lots of devices?
Bitdefender, by a wide margin. Total Security Family covers 25 devices and five people, renewing at $139.99, or $5.60 per device. The cheapest Norton plan on its US store for more than five devices is 360 with LifeLock Select Plus. It covers 10 devices and renews at $189.99, which is $19 per device.
Do Bitdefender and Norton use their own scanning engines?
Bitdefender does, and it licenses that engine to others. AV-Comparatives notes that G Data, Total Defense and VIPRE use it. Norton runs on the Avast engine, and both brands belong to Gen Digital. That’s why Norton, Avast and AVG post identical numbers in AV-Comparatives’ tests.
Is Norton AntiVirus Plus enough on its own?
For five devices that only need malware protection, it’s the cheapest option here. It costs $39.99 for the first year and renews at $84.99, or $17 per device. You get the password manager and 2 GB of backup. You don’t get the VPN or dark web monitoring.
Does Norton’s VPN work on a smart TV?
Yes, on supported TVs. Norton says its multi-device 360 plans now cover smart TVs. The VPN runs on Google TV, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV on Fire OS 8 or newer. Each TV uses one of your plan’s device slots.
The bottom line
Bitdefender vs Norton isn’t decided by malware: they’re a few files apart in every 2026 test. Bitdefender wins on accuracy and renewal price, Norton on its VPN, backup and refund window.
Decide whether you’ll use that VPN, then buy on the second-year price.
