Is Bitdefender Worth It in 2026? The Real Cost After Renewal

Lokesh Kapoor by Lokesh Kapoor

Is Bitdefender worth it when checkout says $59.99 and next year’s bill says $109.99?

Short answer: yes, if you protect more than one device. Buy Bitdefender Total Security, because five devices still cost about $22 each a year after renewal. On one Windows PC, free Microsoft Defender scores almost as well in the labs.

We priced every US plan in October 2026 and read the newest AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives reports.

The catch isn’t protection. It’s the plan that costs more per device than the one above it.

Quick verdict: who should pay for Bitdefender

Bitdefender sits at or near the top of every 2026 lab test we read. Protection isn’t the question. Price is, because every plan for one person renews at 58% to 100% more than it costs on day one.

So judge it on the second-year price. Seen that way, Total Security is fair value for a house full of devices and poor value for one old PC.

Best for: a freelancer with a Windows laptop, a MacBook and two phones who wants one app and one bill. Or a parent covering the whole family, where renewal works out to a few dollars per device.

Not ideal for: one person on one Windows PC who browses and streams. Defender already runs on that machine for free. Skip it too if you want a full-time VPN kept apart from your antivirus.

How we checked (and what we didn’t do)

This is a research-only guide. We haven’t run Bitdefender on a DroidCrunch machine for this post. So there are no install times, scan speeds or screenshots here.

Every US price comes from Bitdefender’s own store on 20 October 2026, before sales tax, along with its renewal and refund terms. The protection numbers come from AV-TEST’s latest Windows 11 test and AV-Comparatives’ 2026 consumer reports.

Our links to Bitdefender, 1Password and Bitwarden are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t change the verdict: one-PC readers still get told to keep Defender.

What does Bitdefender cost after the first year?

Bitdefender starts at $39.99 for the first year and renews at $69.99 to $189.99 a year for one person. The struck-through price on the store is the renewal price. Bitdefender’s terms say so: the discount is the gap between your first year and every year after.

Two plans aren’t in that grid. Ultimate Security Plus costs $119.99 and renews at $189.99, adding US identity theft insurance and credit monitoring. Internet Security is gone; Bitdefender folded it into Total Security.

Families get their own list: five members and up to 25 devices per plan.

Family planFirst yearRenewalPer device at renewal (25 devices)
Total Security Family$79.99$139.99$5.60
Premium Security Family$99.99$169.99$6.80
Ultimate Security Family$119.99$199.99$8.00

Which Bitdefender plan gives you the most per dollar?

Total Security does, for most people. It covers five devices for $40 a year more than Antivirus Plus charges for three. Here’s the maths at renewal prices.

Antivirus Plus costs more per device than Total Security

Antivirus Plus for three devices renews at $69.99. That’s $23.33 per device a year.

Total Security renews at $109.99 for five devices, or $22.00 each. You pay less per device and get the password manager thrown in.

Antivirus Plus only wins if you’ll never pass three devices. On one device it’s the worst deal on the menu: $24.99 to start, then $49.99 a year for a single machine.

Premium Security beats buying the VPN on its own

Bitdefender’s standalone Premium VPN renews at $69.99. Add it to Total Security and you’d pay $179.98 a year.

Premium Security includes unlimited VPN traffic and renews at $129.99. If you want a VPN anyway, that bundle saves you $49.99 a year from year two.

Not sure you need one? Our guide to whether a paid VPN is worth it covers the cases where it earns its fee.

Ultimate Security is $30 a year for alerts

Ultimate renews at $159.99, $30 more than Premium. That’s $2.50 a month for dark web monitoring, an identity score and live breach alerts.

It’s worth it if your email has turned up in a breach before. If your password manager already warns you about leaked logins, you’d be paying twice for one warning.

Is Bitdefender worth it: first-year and renewal prices for Total Security, Premium Security and Ultimate Security
Bitdefender’s plans for one person renew at 58% to 100% more than the first-year price. Budget for the second-year number.

Our take: torn between Antivirus Plus and Total Security? Buy Total Security. It costs less per device at renewal, and it’s the version AV-TEST scored.

Is Bitdefender better than the free Microsoft Defender?

Yes, but by less than the price gap suggests. In AV-TEST’s July-August 2026 test, Bitdefender scored a perfect 18 out of 18 and Defender scored 17.5. Both caught all 297 zero-day samples.

So where does your money go? Into three things Defender doesn’t match.

Offline protection. In AV-Comparatives’ September 2026 malware test, Bitdefender caught 97.2% of samples with no internet connection. Defender caught 82.2%. That counts if you plug in USB drives or work offline for hours.

False alarms. In the same test, Bitdefender wrongly flagged one clean file. Defender flagged 28. Each one is a safe program treated as malware until you override it.

Your other devices. The free Defender that ships with Windows protects that PC. Bitdefender’s plans cover your Mac, Android phone and iPhone under the same account.

Speed is closer than you’d think. On AV-Comparatives’ low-end test PC in April 2026, Bitdefender’s impact score was 9.6, ninth of 19. Defender’s was 12.9, and lower is better.

Bitdefender vs Microsoft Defender lab results: offline detection and false alarms from the September 2026 test
Online, the two sit a tenth of a point apart. Offline detection and false alarms are where Bitdefender earns its fee.

Protecting one Windows PC? Defender plus good habits covers you. Our guide on how to keep your PC safe from a data breach lists the habits that beat any antivirus.

Where Bitdefender loses points

Its weak spots are money and limits, not detection.

The renewal jump. Total Security goes from $59.99 to $109.99 in year two, an 83% rise, and stays there. Over three years you’ll pay $279.97, or about $93 a year.

The 200 MB VPN. Antivirus Plus and Total Security cap the VPN at 200 MB a day per device. By Netflix’s own figures, that’s about four minutes of HD video. It’s enough to check your bank on hotel Wi-Fi, and little else.

A ladder built for upsells. Each tier is sold as everything from the plan below, plus one more feature. That’s how a $39.99 purchase drifts toward a $159.99 renewal.

VPN numbers that don’t match. Bitdefender’s VPN page claims 3,000+ servers in 100+ countries. Its main consumer page says 4,000+ servers in over 49 countries. Treat the VPN as a bonus, not the reason to buy.

A Windows-only free version. Antivirus Free never expires, but there’s no Mac or phone version.

How to buy Bitdefender without overpaying

  1. 1
    Step 1 of 6

    Count your devices first

Add up every laptop, phone and tablet you’d protect. Four or five points to Total Security. Two adults with ten devices points to a Family plan.

  2. 2
    Step 2 of 6

Compare the same plan on two pages

Prices move between pages. On 20 October 2026, one-device Antivirus Plus cost $24.99 on its own page and $19.99 in the box on the free antivirus page.

  3. 3
    Step 3 of 6

    Buy on Bitdefender's own site

Bitdefender can only refund orders placed on its website. Bought from a reseller? The refund has to come from that reseller.

  4. 4
    Step 4 of 6

Put the renewal date in your calendar

Bitdefender emails you 45 days before it renews. Set your own reminder too, so one missed email doesn’t cost you $109.99.

  5. 5
    Step 5 of 6

    Decide on auto-renewal early

In Bitdefender Central, open My Subscriptions, click the three dots on your plan and choose Subscription & Continuous Protection. Cancel at the end of the term if you plan to switch.

  6. 6
    Step 6 of 6

Use the 30-day window if you renew by mistake

Bitdefender refunds in full within 30 days of a first purchase or an automatic renewal. Ask support, not your bank.

Better options for specific readers

You want a VPN first. A dedicated VPN is built for streaming and travel. Start with our NordVPN review or our Surfshark VPN review, and keep Defender running on Windows.

You only want a password manager. Total Security’s vault is tied to your antivirus plan. A standalone app like 1Password or Bitwarden stays with you if you drop Bitdefender. Our list of the best password managers compares them.

You run a website. Bitdefender guards the laptop you log in from, not your hosting account. For the site itself, pick one of these WordPress security plugins.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bitdefender worth it if I only use a Mac?

It can be. Antivirus Plus now covers macOS and costs $24.99 for the first year on one device. The lab results above come from Windows tests, though, so they say nothing about the Mac app. Mac users who install lots of unknown apps get the most from it.

What happens if I turn off Bitdefender auto-renewal?

Your protection keeps running until the paid term ends. Then the plan expires, real-time protection stops and nothing is charged. You can switch auto-renewal back on in Bitdefender Central at any time. Turning it off doesn’t refund the current year; only the 30-day window does.

Is Bitdefender Antivirus Free good enough?

For one Windows PC, it’s a fair free choice with no time limit. Bitdefender lists what it lacks: no Mac or phone version, basic ransomware protection only, no anti-tracking and no social network protection. It also skips the full-system scan for unsafe settings.

Can I use Bitdefender on more than five devices?

Not on an Individual plan, which stops at five devices for one person. The Family versions cover up to 25 devices across five members. Total Security Family costs $79.99 for the first year and renews at $139.99, which is cheaper than two Individual plans.

Can I get a refund if I bought Bitdefender on Amazon or in a shop?

Not from Bitdefender. Its support team can only refund orders placed on Bitdefender’s own website. If you bought a key from Amazon, a retailer or a bundle, ask that seller. Their refund rules apply, not Bitdefender’s 30-day guarantee.

Is Bitdefender better than Norton?

On protection, they’re close. In AV-Comparatives’ February to May 2026 real-world test, Bitdefender blocked 99.5% of threats and Norton 99.3%. Norton had 15 false alarms in the September malware test to Bitdefender’s one. Norton slowed the April test PC less, so compare prices before you pick.

Does Bitdefender protect my WordPress website?

No. Bitdefender protects the devices you log in from, not the server your site runs on. Stopping a password stealer on your laptop still helps your site. But malware on your hosting account needs a security plugin, server-side scans and regular backups.

The bottom line

Is Bitdefender worth it? For a home with four or more devices, yes. Total Security still works out to about $22 per device a year after the price jump.

Want the VPN too? Premium Security costs less than buying it separately. Only one Windows PC? Keep Microsoft Defender and spend the money elsewhere.

Whatever you pick, budget for the renewal price, not the first-year one. Put that date in your calendar the day you buy.
